Since its announcement, the YouRock Guitar has caught my full attention. The product, built by Inspired Instruments, allows you to play both Rockband and Guitar hero with a 6 string guitar setup.
We met with JR, the CEO of Inspired Instruments, back in January at the Consumer Electronic Show. We got an invite to see the first production line samples and play around with them. At E3 JR was back again with the final production model that is currently shipping. So of course, we had to swing by for a quick interview!
Casey and I had some very different feelings about the guitar back in January and still do today; especially when considering Rock Band 3’s announcement of a Fender built 6-string REAL electric guitar controller.
From a strictly musician standpoint, I see pro’s and cons to both models. I can pretty much guarantee the PS3 Rock Band 3 controller won’t work on the Xbox. YouRock Guitar works on everything including the Wii with the help of some $20 controller cards.
The YouRock Guitar has built in samples from some of the greatest guitars of all time, along with instructional modes, the ability to play with headphones over your iPod and will never require tuning. It’s pretty much your best solution for on the go electronic guitar playing. Hell, you can even record a sick riff and record it to the guitar for playback later! That is the hottest thing since fire for an electronic music producer like my self.
It’s very interesting to see the music game scene evolve. If E3 has taught us anything, it’s that we’re about to partake in the largest musical uprising this world has ever seen. Video games will teach you to play music.
