XpanD 3D Video Interview - The experience you've always wanted 3D to be.

The days of strained eyes and gimmicky 3D seem to be coming to a close. At least, that's the impression Casey and I left with after a recent 3D presentation and tech demo from XpanD.

In North America the major brand of 3D Glasses in any given theater is RealD. Sure, this technology looks okay and gets the job done on a low manufacturing budget. But after seeing XpanD strut their stuff, RealD feels like something I might find in the bottom of my cereal box. Seriously, it's hot like fire. After watching a 20 minute full 3D PowerPoint, demonstration clips and playing the latest Avatar game using these glasses I had zero eye fatigue. I didn't feel the slightest bit strained or uncomfortable at any time during our entire time in the private press suite.

The ability to wear the glasses for long periods of time makes this an extremely viable solution to in home 3D movie and gaming entertainment. In Asia and most of the UK, XpanD technology is the standard choice in 3D due to it's superior performance. North America has been slow to adapt due to very high costs of the advanced glasses when compared to RealD. But as we enter 2010 production costs have drastically dropped and the increased performance, comfort and all around sexiness have caught the eye of North American theaters, production companies and even consumers.

We got the chance to talk with David, the head of the Gaming Department with XpanD. We wanted to know just how these awesome glasses worked, how compatible they were with existing technologies and when we could get our hands on a pair of these bad boys.

Great interview. I always get headaches from watching 3D movies so I'm excited to get my hands on one of these. Best of all being able to play existing PS3 games in 3D is a  real boner.

nice interview and nice custom mic flag. I don't think 3D gaming will ever be mainstream. I think of it as more of novelty way of playing games plus how gamers are going to spend the extra money on new 3D TV's.

I thought so too, but after seeing XpanD it's a whole new game. We saw more RealD stuff today, and it sucks. It hurts your eyes and looks like crap. This XpanD 3D needs to be seen to believe, it's exactly what I've wanted 3D to be. Avatar looks amazing with the 3D.

Cool interview! I'm a huge fan of 3D and this looks like the wave of the future. If only the glasses could improve some game's 1 dimensional characters and plot...

The sony glasses we demo'd at the CES show ourselves couldn't stack up to the XpanD line of glasses. There are much cheaper alternatives, but these glasses featured here will work with any 3D technology in existence. Also, I'm not sure which glasses / system you are referring to but the XpanD glasses do not require a 3rd party "system" of any kind. They work with any existing DLP and IR 3D technology on the market. The glasses start at $60 for their X101 model.

It's very good news to hear it will only require a system update on the PS3. But the real upgrade is getting a 3D TV, I bet those will be very pricy.

I still prefer the LED technology over this. In my opinion, I would save money for when OLED gets big, and by big I mean BIG, than buying a 3D TV.

I will also be waiting for some time. OLED by the time it drops to a normal price will probably have 3D processing in it. So that's a pretty good plan if you're not dying for a 3D TV right now. OLED is a very very sexy technology.
