Up next on the X10 docket.. or maybe dossier, we have new information on the upcoming XBLA title that I'm personally excited for and applying a Teflon coating to my couch groove in preparation of, Perfect Dark.
If you're a bottom line reader, the take me home is thus. It's the original PD in all the ways that made it great with additional features and 8 players on Live, as well as graphically 10 - 20 times better in 1080p (60 frames/sec). Kenn Lobb, creative director for Microsoft Game Studios said some words on PD.
Game mechanics are the true timeless part of a game. A game of solitaire today still absorbs your time just as well as it did way back in Windows 3.1. The major and most obvious feature of a game that gets constantly improved over time is how good the game looks. I firmly believe (and hopefully not romanticizing) that the game part of the original PD is damn good and an aesthetic touchup is all it needs to remove this diamond from the rough.
From screenshots of the remake, the graphics quality does look a bunch better. I mean, if it entered a graphics contest it'd likely still walk away with a participation ribbon but ranges from fine to good when you tailor back your expectations to an arcade title.
I'm definitely happy to say that all the things you loved from the original are back with the welcome addition of Live multiplayer. The press release makes a point to state that PD is 'based on the original code for full authenticity' including the game mode (and this was a big one for me) counter-operative, a highly under utilized concept. Imagine playing the Halo 3 campaign where one person plays as Master Chief and you play as all the covenant underlings against him, jumping from body to body as you die.
One cause of concern that might not be immediately apparent is the transition from the N64's single analog stick controller to the 360's duel. If that revelation gave you doubts as to how they handled it or unpleasant memories of Perfect Dark Zero's controls, Kenn anticipated such concerns and said.
With that, the game will include two additional button remaps which are Spartan (Halo controls) and Duty Calls (for Call of Duty players).
One of my greatest fears on a Live enabled game of PD is the Farsight gun that can shoot through walls. That's going to be a griefer gong show. Also, they have a word to describe that throgh wall shooting ability on other FPS multiplayer games. A bug.
