It’s common at E3 for a variety of smaller titles to get lost in the shuffle amidst all the sequels and interesting new tech. At times these overlooked games overcome the odds and become massive hits such as the case with Guitar Hero as it wasn’t even in the main hall when it debuted at E3 many years back. But other times these small gems usually get released at some point to a whimper with a loyal but small audience that appreciates the game.
Hopefully this won’t be the case with the upcoming XBLA game ‘Splosion Man. A game that like Bionic Commando Rearmed harkens back to the good old days of crazy 2D sidescrolling goodness but gives it a modern day touch. ‘Splosion Man has a pretty basic story and mechanic: you assume control of a military experiment that escapes and you’re trying to escape the well protected and guarded facility. The catch is that you’re made out of flame and plasma and you can explode allowing you to propel to otherwise unreachable areas, hence the title ‘Splosion Man.
While it sounds like a gimmick that could get it that doesn’t seem to be the case based on the debut trailer and the recent E3 footage. Not only does ‘Splosion Man have some extremely nice cartoony visuals but seeing your character blow up and rocket up towards the sky or do a kamikaze like move to take out an enemy is just hilarious. I’m interested to see if any extra abilities are given to the player and what types of scenarios or potential boss battles wait ahead.
‘Splosion Man is currently planned for a July release on Xbox Live Arcade. Check back then for a review as I’ll definitely be adding this to my collection.
