On the latest episode of the Major Nelson podcast Tekken brand manager Joon Wang teased that the upcoming Tekken 6 for the PS3/360 will feature “ground-breaking online modes.” Joon of course didn’t say what the modes will be or give any hints and merely said that more will be revealed at E3 next week.
Now what exactly could these “ground-breaking online modes” be? There isn’t much you can do with modes for a fighting game but there are a few possibilities out there. Now the first one, which is probably a massive long shot, is perhaps we’ll get cross-platform online play. This would certainly be a ground-breaking mode since there haven’t been any console games to do it so far and it could definitely get the fanboy wars brewing to another level.
The other and more likely possibility is that we’ll get a 4-player Tekken Tag mode. Tekken Tag has a massive fanbase and there are those who have wanted it to return and putting the mode online could please a lot of people. Though the one problem I have with that mode is how will people tag in another teammate? There are always annoying folks online and this could perhaps top the cake as being home of the online punks when you find yourself in a battle with a teammate that refuse to tag you into the match.
But perhaps everyone is wrong and Namco Bandai could truly have a massive surprise for us with Tekken 6. I’m just hoping that the modes won’t be exclusive to either platform as that kind of stuff is getting really old now.
