Tecmo and Nintendo troll us, Samus not playable in Dead or Alive: Dimensions

I think we’ve just been trolled by Nintendo and Tecmo Koei as the legendary character of Samus Aran won’t be playable in Dead or Alive: Dimensions.  Now some of you are probably saying “Well of course Samus won’t be playable. Why would since DOA is a fighting franchise after all?”  Well the main source for my feeling that we’ve been trolled is because last week it was revealed that the Nintendo 3DS exclusive return of Dead or Alive, DOA: Dimensions, would feature a Metroid: Other M themed stage.  This news went across well with gamers, especially the teaser at the end which hinted at Samus joining the fray as a combatant.

Alas, our favorite sci-fi bounty hunter won’t be able to bust out 25 hit combos or complete a fan fiction scenario as Samus will merely be a support character.  Speaking to Eurogamer, Team Ninja’s Yosyke Hayashi revealed that “So talking about Samus Aran, is she playable or not? This time she's not playable. But Samus Aran will be shown in the game. She comes to help the player. That's the collaboration shown there. But how you can unlock Samus Aran? Please find out by yourself.”

I’m all for some cool video game cross-overs, but in the case of Samus in DOA: Dimensions, I must ask why the hell even bother to include a beloved character like that if she won’t be playable?  The DOA series isn’t a stranger to having a cool bonus fighter (Xbox 360 DOA had a female Spartan lovingly joked as Master Chief’s girlfriend) so why not have Nintendo’s heroic badass be a playable character?  Maybe Nintendo was apprehensive of seeing Samus laying the smackdown, even if it’s minus gore and excessive violence, but a playable (emphasis on playable) version of Samus is what gamers want and not a mere support move bonus that boils down to being a ten to fifteen second cutscene.

Yosyke didn’t comment as to what Samus’ support move/ability will be so we’ll have to wait even longer to find that info out. I’m still excited to try out Dead or Alive: Dimensions once I pick up my 3DS, but as a gamer I can’t help but feel a bit heartbroken right now.
