Sam Raimi reveals who will be writing the World of Warcraft movie

The somewhat odd video game movie news continues after last week’s Dante’s Inferno news as today we have an update on the World of Warcraft movie.  Speaking to the MTV Movie Blog director Sam Raimi (yeah, the dude who made Evil Dead and Spider-Man is helming WoW) said that writer Robert Rodat is putting together a script that really feels like a WoW adventure.  Now that isn't particularly an exciting piece of news or an interesting comment except for the fact that the writer for the WoW film wasn't officially announced until Sam let that slip.

Rodat’s previous work includes the classic WWII film “Saving Private Ryan” and the Mel Gibson Redcoat killing revenge drama that was “The Patriot.”  Mr. Rodat seems to know how to tell a gripping and character driven story so it’ll be quite interesting to see how that translates into the fantasy driven world of WoW which in place of Nazis and evil British soldiers has Orcs and other beasts.  I’m just surprised that Rodat came aboard the project since his last, or at least credited, job was “The Patriot” back in 2000. Maybe he’s one of the many legions that are WoW fans and jumped at the chance to be involved with the film adaptation.

Despite previous reports the WoW will have an original story and will not be based on any existing WoW fiction.  The project currently doesn’t have a release date though I expect Mr. Raimi will go full steam on WoW once he finishes up Spider-Man 4 which is set for a May 2011 release.

But if Rodat and Raimi don’t put a Leeroy Jenkins reference in the movie then it’s a complete failure.
