Fat Princess is like cake, sometimes it's good and tastes yummy while other times it does more harm than good
By now most of us have played a bevy of multiplayer online games that have spread across a wide spectrum of genres and settings. Some have fought intense battles against the Helghast while others have faced off against a never ending zombie horde as they struggle to survive with their allies. But have any of us taken up a battle as a Warrior to rescue their Princess in a fairytale like fantasyland where men can be turned into chickens? Fat Princess puts the player in exactly that type of scenario and provides an enjoyable online experience that doesn’t involve shooting guys in the head and t-bagging them.
Obviously most of you know by now that Fat Princess revolves around two teams trying to capture and rescue a Princess that is force fed cake to make her huge and tough to carry back to the Castle. But beyond this simple mechanic lies a game that has some nice character classes to play as and is surprisingly brutal but still charming when it comes to the violence.
There are five classes in the game: Warrior, Priest, Worker, Mage, and the Ranger. Choosing which class you play as is a simple case of picking up the hat for the class and simply putting it on. You don’t need to pause the game and go into a menu to choose or change or wait until you die and respawn to become the class you want. You can even change class mid battle if you want simply by picking up the hat of a dead enemy or teammate. This is a perfect mechanic since it allows players to switch things up if they haven’t been doing well with a particular class or if their team is in desperate need of help from a class like a Mage or Worker.
Each class of course has their particular pros and cons but there isn’t a specific class that is too weak or overpowered to the point of ruining the game and you’ll never see a scenario where an entire team is nothing but Warriors trying to enforce some of their brute strength on the opposing team. The Warrior class of course is on the front line of battle due to their sword and broadsword while the Worker, Ranger and Mage class can sit back and pick off enemies with some of their abilities which range from throwing bombs, shooting arrows or casting flames upon enemies. Each class has two levels with the second being an upgrade which is only attainable by the Worker class upgrading the hat stations at the castle. This is one of the aspects in Fat Princess where team work is required but doesn’t feel too force fed in a way. You see the Worker class needs to go about cutting down trees and mining rocks to upgrade castle defensives and the hat machines. Doing this isn’t a chore since the player gets points for chopping down trees, delivering the material to the hat machine or outpost and finally building the upgrade for it. So in a way you can selfishly go about doing tasks but you’re still helping the team and are being rewarded for it.
Fat Princess is a game where it’s best to go about using a small smidgen of teamwork but it’s not really in the same sense of being in a squad like in Call of Duty or Killzone. You can certainly go about slaying enemies with a group of allies but you’re never really bound to stay in a group until it’s time to storm the opposing team’s castle and grab the Princess. When it comes to grabbing the Princess that’s when you need to band together since the situation can turn into utter mayhem if there are a decent number of enemies in the castle. At times grabbing the Princess can be a bit difficult since the respawn time for players is only five seconds. Sure, that may sound nice since you aren’t out of the battle for too long but considering that all players respawn at their castle you could find a few instances where 10 or more players spawn at their castle while you’re trying to get the Princess out of there.
Visually Fat Princess just exudes charm. Seeing the cell-shaded style big head characters run around these beautiful environments and hacking one another apart is just a wonder to see. You may not expect a game that looks this cute to be graphic when it comes to the violence but Fat Princess is quite brutal at times. Buckets of blood are on the ground once an enemy has died and at times you may even see a skull or chopped off foot every now and then depending on what attack was used to kill the enemy.
The environments are full of character as well and seeing a mosaic grass pattern in one level really makes things pop and adds a lot of character to the world. The levels themselves are quite diverse with some being a straightforward flat forest type area while others are sprawling landscapes with multiple bridges, jump platforms and some even have hidden passages that make it easier to infiltrate the enemy castle. The difficulty in the game is ramped up as the later levels feature tough navigation thanks to walkways overflowing with lava and resources being scarce or hard to get to. It’s nice that the developers changed things up a bit with the levels instead of it simply being slight variations of the same map type.
Fat Princess is a fun game but there are a few issues. At this stage in its release it’s almost impossible to get into a game via the quick join option. Your best bet at getting into a match is making the game yourself or doing a search for any game mode. This of course is fine in some regards since it allows the player to tailor the experience for themselves but it would’ve been nice if the netcode was a bit better at launch since there were similar connection problems during the beta back in May. It can also be a bit hard to keep a track of your position during some of the more hectic battles since at times there a can around 12 characters bunched together in a battle of mayhem. Despite having the username appear above the players things can get really hectic which may lead to some confusion and a few cheap deaths. But perhaps one of the biggest problems with the game is the length of the matches. The “Rescue the Princess” matches can go on forever if either team doesn’t reclaim their Princess and my last two matches in that mode went into full time with the winner simply being chosen based on total points since both teams failed to recapture their Princess. Tightening the match time and perhaps changing the spawn time for players may make the battles a bit tighter instead of them being long fests of players simply chopping one another up and battling for outpost control.
Is Fat Princess a fun game? Yes it is, but right now it’s a bit of a toss up whether folks should get it now. The game is definitely a blast to play and is worth the $15 price tag since there’s a decent amount of maps and modes outside of Rescue the Princess such as Team Deathmatch, Invasion, a single player story and Gladiator mode and even a Soccer mini-game that is pure madness but the game may not have that long term factor that some players want to get out of their online game. The game is fun to play online and cut fools apart with your sword or caste a freeze spell with your Mage but Fat Princess isn’t the type of game where you’re going to put 5+ hours a day or 12 hours a week into. Fat Princess is more a nice pick up and play every now and then type game and isn’t something you may find yourself playing 3 months from now. That really isn’t a criticism of the game but more of a warning to folks interested in buying the game and are a bit unsure if they should pick it up. Fat Princess is a charming and enjoyable game but I’m not sure how long it’ll last unless a few of the problems are addressed and unique content is made available to prolong the experience and keep users interested in playing online.

I'm not really blaming the game for the online problems but I would've expected a better launch since the same problems, or variations of it, were present in the beta which was over two months ago. I do hope that new DLC, which I didn't forget about and there's even a menu option for it in the game, brings some life into the game but if it's just a few new map packs I still worry that the game may not bring in new players and it'll mostly just be the hardcore fans who stick with it.
As a whole I'm kind of getting a Calling All Cars vibe from Fat Princess. The game is fun, unique and makes for a nice online game but at times it can be a tad bit shallow and folks will likely abandon it after awhile to play other games or merely because they got bored, which is exactly what happened which CAC. That was my meaning behind the 3 months comment. The game is indeed fun but unless a somewhat huge overhaul is added with the classes which changes things up, which would be nice if its a free DLC thing, but if that doesn't happen, and you shouldn't necesarily expect it to, then the audience for the game is likely to move on to other games. In 3 months time a ton of new games are coming out and I'm sure a faction of the Fat Princess audience will move onto those games instead of playing the same old stuff in FP.
I do hope for the best though and hopefully Titan can turn the game around.
So you recommend me not to buy it and save that money like for NBA 2K10 or Modern Warfare 2?
AHAHHAHAHAHA That credits sequence is amazing LOL wow. Did not expect that.
Fantastic review Ian.
A game should be delayed if it's not ready in my opinion. Releasing patches should not be part of your "release plan."
I'm going to hold off and buy Final Fantasy 7 in the mean time and see if people stick with this game. but it looks really cool. I might also wait for a price drop. I like the sound and over all feeling of the game, specifically the voice over guy ahaha
im in a dilema if to spend 15 bucks on this or wait for castle crashers...
Did you guys know Braid's also coming to PS3? I'd like this game but £10 or $15 seems a bit too much for me. I'll wait for the seasonal sale on the PS Store. But any way great review Ian.
Very detailed review. This game seems like the game to own from PSN. This has got to be the best month for downloads. So many great downloads on XBLive, PSN and Wii Ware. Even the DSi has that new music game to download. All these games came in one month.
Nice review ian,i think im going to hold off this game for a while,as MVSC is coming up.
So, is it worth it or not?
If you have nothing else to play and the cash to spend then its worth getting now as the game is indeed fun despite the problems it has. But if you wait til a price drop happens you may run the risk of the community being gone.
Only if I have nothing else to play? You're saying that if I have other games to play this is not worth it?
Pretty much. But mostly due to current price point and some minor gameplay issues. The risk you run while waiting is that by the time the price drops there might not be many people left playing. If you're looking for a great PSN game check out Shatter. Plus Marvel VS Capcom and Castle Crashers are coming soon.
I was reading they a patch is on the way for the online issues. And lmao @ sir mix-a-lot. Game looks good though otherwise good review again Ian!
G0W: I would wait for Castle Crashers, one of the, if not the best XBLA arcade games out there. It too will probaly be $15.
Did someone erase my post?
Wasn't this game planed to be for wii and ds too?
NO it was only a PSN game. I will get this game eventually.
As james has already said it was always a PSN exclusive. Though there is a PSP version in the works which I think may be scheduled to be released this year.
I saw some videos on the interwebs so I thought it was real =)
Sith: Yeah CC looks really fun + it has Co-Op which is one of the reasons i buy PSN games, but on the other hand i really want fat princess, i guess il just wait for castle crashers, and see how it goes and check out the reviews and stuff..
I still want Fat Princess despite some unaccurate reviews on GS and Eurogamer because they do not think of the future, only on the current game. What's the problem with this? As you may already know the game has big online problems and the problem is that it's an online-based game which means that people will not think good of it. They are very stupid not to think that Titan is already testing the patch to release it. Not only this, stupid reviewers, Titan has been one of the few developing companies to keep the fans and consumers informed. They do not only release patch details on the blog, but also they have checked 95% of the e-mails and posted all the changes the fans and consumers wanted on their blog. So guess what, stupid reviewers, Fat Princess may not be great today or the past 4 or 5 days, but when the patch releases it's a WHOLE new story because, like I've said before, it's and ONLINE-based game.
But I still think you're missing a key portion of what some folks feel about the game: none of this should've happened in the first place. Yes, having a few day 1 glitches or issues pop up is common in any online game but they shouldn't have been like anywhere near how they were for Fat Princess considering the beta testing that was done in North America and Europe months prior to release.
With a game like this making a good first impression is very important not only to please the folks who bought the game but to spread good buzz about the project. So far Fat Princess kind of hasn't left that good an impression with folks and people are already moving on to other games like TMNT: Turtles in Time or the upcoming Marvel vs. Capcom 2.
Titan should be applauded in a way for being very active in giving players updates and things of that nature but they should've released a game that was a bit more issue free.
100% agree. The fact they have been running huge beta tests for months and months makes it even worse.
I agree it was a heavy mistake they made, but once the patch is released, Ian, I believe all those dedicated players and fans in the PS3 forums and the rest of the community will be playing it for more than three months now that Titan will also release more patches according the ideas of its costumers and DLC.
Was Fat Princess your most anticipated game of the year or something? I'm just asking since you seem to be somewhat defensive of the game considering you haven't actually played it, at least to my knowledge.
LOL No it's not and I indeed I haven't played but when I saw it it looked really good and I wanted to buy it but now so many things stopping me from doing it is just...I don't know. I was also thinking of Shatter, but I thought that when I pass it I would not play it anymore and it's more for having it in the cellphone so it's not worth the $8 or $9. But Fat Princess has 9 maps, promises DLC with more maps and maybe classes and modes. And unlike BF 1943, for example, Fat Princess also has a single player mode which is not the strong of the game but it's a good addition to get the feeling of it.
And guess what? It's $15. But you say, "OMG why not go play KZ 2 or MGO?". Well, I will do also. But I want also a break from shooters besides NBA 2K8 and this medieval RTS could solve the problem, or at least that I thought. I really need help on this decision, Ian (or someone else), so if you have any options in mind that are less than $30 please recommend. And if you still recommend Fat Princess as a nice option considering the future then I'll just wait for the patch.
Bottom line: What I'm saying is that the game shows promise, so it's worth buying it thinking future, not present.

Nice review. Talking about not playing it in three months. Why I don't agree with that? Well, Ian, put it this way: Titan must already know the problems the game is having and that is probably thier top priority over everything else and are probably working full hours to fix it considering how it's harming their game. So once they fix it, it's going to be a blast, which means people will keep playing for more than three months. Also, you forgot the fact that there's going to be DLC which probably includes more maps and modes. That adds more gameplay because it's adding more things to do and more maps to play in.
You see, people are now blaming the game for all the online problems it is currently having but they do not realize it's day 3 and that a patch could be coming very soon fixing it. And like I said before, once it's fixed it's a WHOLE different story which will change the WHOLE game because it's an ONLINE-based game.
