The PlayStation Move Action Of Sorcery Is Finally Revealed

When it comes to seeing a project surface again after a dormant period it can either be a good or bad thing. In some cases it can be good to see how a game has evolved and changed over the course of development but sometimes that can lead to immediate disappointment if the current product doesn’t look as good as the initial concept did.  We’re seeing such a thing occur right now with the recent reveal of Metal Gear Rising as gamers are happy to see the game again but it’s a completely different product than what we were promised.  At long last Sony has finally revealed their PlayStation Move game Sorcery and I’m happy to say that it looks like it’ll deliver the Move enabled goodness we’ve been wishing for.

The history of Sorcery is something that even some PlayStation fans may not remember all that much.  Originally revealed at E3 2010, Sorcery was a completely new IP for the PlayStation 3 that looked like it could be a killer app for the PlayStation Move. Despite featuring a somewhat kid focused presentation, Sorcery showed that gamers could enjoy a core gaming experience for the Move and it not be hindered by Move implementation that was either lame or simply executed poorly. But alas Sorcery fell off the map after E3 2010 but we here are almost a year and a half later and the game could become a major title for the PS3 in 2012.

A lot has changed since we last saw Sorcery but one thing has remained the same: you play as a young wizard, minus glasses and a forehead scar, and you can cast spells using the PlayStation Move.  As expected, Sorcery has undergone a massive redesign, perhaps indicative of just how early the game was in development when it was publicly unveiled last year.  Gone is the overly kid like art design, which did include a protagonist that was a wee bit short, and instead we have a rather lush looking game with some incredibly original art design.  I don’t think Sorcery will initially wow gamers in the graphics department much as Uncharted 3 does or other key 1st party PS3 games, but I really like the fantasy based art direction that has been taken in Sorcery and simply how detailed everything looks.

Unlike recent PlayStation Move adventure games such as Medieval Moves: Deadmund’s Quest, Sorcery allows gamers to have complete control over their character. Not only will you be able to take out the reptilian Bogies with your wand via the PlayStation Move, but you’ll also be able to use the Nav Con or a DualShock 3 controller to move around the world with complete freedom.  The combat in Sorcery is rather in-your face to a degree as gamers will be in constant battles against enemies of varying types, some of which will be formidable trolls or giant spiders.  Some depth will be offered in Sorcery to elevate it beyond Move enable magical pew-pewing as eight different spells will be offered and gamers will be able to upgrade magical abilities such as lightning and firestorm attacks.

Compared to when we saw it last Sorcery is now a more action centric title but it honestly looks good.  It’s of course hard to judge how good the motion tracking is when watching a video of a move game, especially one that comes straight from the developer, but the flow of the action seems solid and there doesn’t seem to be any slow points or moments that brings the action to a complete screeching halt as there were in the recent Harry Potter video game.  Using different spells in Sorcery looks to have an actual impact on the battles besides a different special effect being cast so it’ll be nice to play around with things a bit and set up scenarios when gamers can be a complete wizard master of Gandalf standards.

Sorcery may not totally push the PlayStation Move in an incredibly original or previously unseen direction, but it’s just nice to see a new IP that was built from the ground up for the device. Developer The Workshop seems to have thought things out rather well in Sorcery along with finding the perfect balance in the art design and general tone of the game, which despite having big creatures and a talking cat companions still seems like it’ll be able to connect to older gamers, perhaps in a way similar to the Zelda series.  It may have taken longer than expected to see the magic based action of Sorcery, but it seems like it’ll be worth it as the game has all the makings to be an enjoyable action-adventure game minus any dudebro elements or constant gun battles, a thing that is all too rare these days.

Sorcery will be available for the PlayStation 3 in Spring 2012.
