PlayStation Heroes Come To Life In Sony's Live Long Play Ad [Video]

Video game ads are always hit and miss since they either try to be too unique in order to captivate people or are simple snippets of game footage condensed into a 20 second clip.  For the most part we’ve gotten some good video game ads this generation that pay respect to the property without dumbing things down too much for the mainstream audience. Even games like Dante’s Inferno have gotten decent ads amidst classics like the ad campaign the Gears of War series has received.  Sony in particular has improved vastly this generation with their Kevin Butler ad campaign for the PS3/PSP that would make Don Draper a happy man. But now Sony has launched their newest ad campaign and it’s something that core gamers may get a kick out of.

The key ad campaign for the PlayStation this season is “Live Long Play”, a slogan that’s rather appropriate given Sony’s goal of appealing to both core and mainstream gamers.  With Kevin Butler kicking off the campaign or at least announcing it, Sony has finally kicked the campaign off with a rather in-depth live-action commercial.

Teased last week, the Live Long Play premier commercial features two soldiers (from a WWII video game) entering a pub which is apparently a hot spot for video game characters since almost every notable protagonist from a key video game franchise within the last four years is having a merry time talking with one another.

Seeing characters like Lightning from Final Fantasy XIII chilling out talking to characters such as Nathan Drake from Uncharted probably could’ve been horrific and look like a cosplay party gone wrong, but things are pulled off convincingly in the commercial. It is odd to see Nathan Drake realized as a person, more-so since actor Nolan North’s voice is coming out of someone that isn’t him, but the quality of the commercial is rather high and certain characters like Cole from Infamous look right on the money in this realistic interpretation. There are a few odd moments in the commercial, which ultimately is supposed to represent the experience a gamers has had, like a somewhat off looking Old Snake from MGS4 and a Kratos that looks to be too damn big. But other than a few sketchy interpretations there are quite a few nice moments in the commercial like seeing a few brief cameo appearances in the background like Chell from Portal or a Sackboy paying chess (pay attention to the start of the commercial for another LBP reference).

The overall message of the commercial isn’t too heavy handed or misguided, but I don’t know if casual gamers or those unfamiliar with properties like Twisted Metal, Resistance or Hitman will appreciate it.  There definitely is an almost whimsical attraction to the commercial since it may make someone interested into finding out who that guy with the flaming clown mask or stealth suit is, but I don’t know if it’ll have as much resounding success as the Kevin Butler campaign or even Sony’s old “Live In Your World, Play In Ours” campaign did back in the day.

You can watch the full ad in the video below but Sony will be airing 60-second versions of the video on ESPN this weekend during NFL broadcasts.
