Last month Q Games announced the latest chapter in the PixelJunk series with PixelJunk 1-4, a game where players control a capsule as it navigates through various caverns facing off against not only the numerous enemies that lurk in them but the various natural elements as they try to rescue allies. Obviously PixelJunk 1-4 isn't that catchy a title so Q Games decided to hold a contest in which users could submit a name, win some swag and be included in the credits for the game. All in all it was a good concept for a contest to go along with an awesome looking game.
Today the PlayStation Blog announced the winning title and as you can see from the picture above the game will now be called PixelJunk Shooter. To be honest I think the name is a bit meh. Sure it conveys one aspect of the game but the game has more depth than simply being another shooter and I think those out there who aren't game geeks like us and don't follow things that closely will expect PJS to be a game that it isn't.
Some of the runners up included PixelJunk Depths, PixelJunk Caves and PixelJunk S.O.S. All those titles seem to fit the game a bit more suitably. Now Q Games president Dylan Cuthbert goes on to say that PixelJunk Depths didn't work that well since it almost made people sound like they had lisps and all in all was just too difficult to say. That's understandable since you don't want the consumer to feel stupid trying to say the title of the game but what about PixelJunk Caves? That title is perfect for the game and doesn't seem too vague or ill-fitting as the Shooter title does.
I'm highly awaiting PixelJunk Shooter and think it could end up being one of the best PSN games this year but I'm just hoping that the title doesn't bury the game through users who ignore it since they think it's merely yet another Geometry Wars game.
