With the Mortal Kombat hype high after the release of the MK film pitch video, Warner Brothers Interactive has announced the latest Mortal Kombat game. Simply titled Mortal Kombat, the game promises to take gamers back the glory days of the franchise as the game will feature a “mature presentation.” Best of all the new MK game will be a 2D fighter similar to Street Fighter IV and the upcoming Marvel vs. Capcom 3.
The new Mortal Kombat game of course features a few new additions such as a co-op arcade fighting mode and tag-team play. And hardcore MK fans can rest easy as the Fatalities are making a proper return to the game. There won’t be any of that “create your own Fatality” or censored crap as MK will feature the over-the-top Fatalies the series is known for. All of this will be presented to us by a new graphics engine as Unreal Engine 3 (which powered MK vs. DC) has seemingly been dropped.
MK co-creator and Creative Director Ed Boon seems to think the new game will please as he said “This game really is a response to what players have been demanding: mature presentation, reinvented 2D fighting mechanic and the best, most gruesome fatalities ever!” Whether or not Boon’s promise will stay true remains to be seen; especially in the wake of the MK film pitch which was received well amongst the fanbase.
Along with the announcement of the game, WB Interactive also announced that MK developer Midway Chicago will be renamed NetherRealm Studios. While it’s sad to see the Midway name officially fade away the new moniker of the studio is extremely fitting.
Mortal Kombat is set for a 2011 release for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

The first trailer has been released and so far things look good. It would've been nice if the art style was changed up more and the animations weren't reused (AGAIN!) but hey, it's 2D MK gaming with gruesome fatalities.

YES! My prayers have been answered for the most part! Oh man, Mileena please just keep that mask on I beg you and I won't complain! MY god this game looks like it's going to be amazing. Pretty cool how you can see Kira in that background when Kung Lao puts his hat back on. Nice easter egg.
Freaking awesome looking. The gameplay looks as close as you can get to the original trilogy while keeping new graphics and such... fatalities making a return, awesome! Happy to see MK returning to its roots.
Omfg. I really hope that close up, Xray bone breaking shit is a new Brutality system. That would be sick. I approve of all of this. Make it happen!
