Mortal Kombat Joins The Roster of EVO 2011

Shogun Gamer’s very own Casey White has been chronicling his journey at entering the EVO fighting game tournament in Las Vegas and perhaps I may enter the fray based on today’s news.  After being looked at as a casual fighting game for more than a decade, the upcoming entry of Mortal Kombat will be at EVO 2011 for the fighting masses to enjoy.

Previously, EVO has been an event dominated by fighting games such as Tekken and Street Fighter, the two franchises that are played the most in competitive play. Fans of Mortal Kombat have sadly been left out for the past few years but now that’s changing with this year’s EVO tournament. The news of MK’s return to EVO hasn’t been formally announced, but after a Google web cache of the EVO 2011 registration page listed Mortal Kombat as one of the games available at the tournament the game is pretty much a lock to appear.

An official announcement is expected to be made later tonight as the entire EVO 2011 fighting game roster will be revealed on fighting game enthusiast website Shoryuken at 9:30pm EST.  At times the core fighting game community has looked at the MK games in dismay over what the series became, but so far the team at NetherRealm Studios is developing the latest MK game with the core fighting game fan in mind hence that’s why MK is returning to EVO.  I think everyone has been both shocked and impressed with how depth laden the new combat mechanics of MK seem to be and I’m sure within the three months of MK’s release in April and EVO in July that people will master specific characters if not the entire roster.

It's awesome that Mortal Kombat will be at EVO and now all I need to do is brush up on my skills so I don't look like a complete chump.
