Mafia II to feature Playboy content

In a somewhat unexpected partnership, 2K Games today announced that the world of Mafia II will have a small dose of vintage goodness thanks to Playboy magazine.  Not only will those who play Mafia II be able to live the life of a rising mobster but they’ll also be able to collect virtual versions of the iconic Playboy magazine.

An astounding plethora of Playboy content will be available in Mafia II as Playboy is lending 50 covers and Centerfolds for players to collect. Some may scoff that Playboy’s appearance in the game is nothing more than a way to create buzz or to be scintillating but it does work given the context of the game and its setting.

2K Games President Christoph Hartman also makes a valid point on Playboy’s appearance in the game saying “In partnering with Playboy, we are able to add a unique element of authenticity to the game by using vintage images from the magazine that illustrate the power of Playboy’s influence on the attitudes and culture of that generation.”

So when people aren’t busy shooting guys with Tommy Guns or blowing up buildings they can scavenge Empire City for Playboy magazines. Sounds like a nice little diversion and added incentive for putting countless hours into the game. I just wonder what will be the hardest issue of Playboy to collect but I have a feeling it could be the iconic Marilyn Monroe issue if that makes its way into the game.

Mafia II is slated for release later this year (hopefully) and you can check out the latest trailer for the game here.

Playboy is not even irreverent in today's culture to be worthiness enough to create a buzz. To me this sounds like grasping at straws to create some cheap controversy to generate media press thus getting the game some free advertising. Scoff I shall

today's generation does not give a damn about that generation. The main reason why today's generation will mainly interested is because of violence the subject matter of the game represents. The whole gangster mythology of movies like the Godfather helped create. Whatever influences that was around during that era is LOST among today's generation and they will relate to it. If they are serious about re-creating some good old days flashbacks with the inclusive of the Playboy magazines collecting  then must be expecting mostly long retired gents to be buying this game for that Playboy flavor ambiance. And yes I do know how to read!
