So far Gamescom 2010 has had a few surprises while other announcements have either been leaked previously or were to be expected. Sony on the other hand truly had a few surprises up their sleeve when it came to their Gamescom showing. We all know that developer Insomniac Games was hard on work on multiple projects, some of which are PS3 exclusive while others are multiplatform. But I don’t think any of us truly expected a new Ratchet & Clank game to be shown today, let alone one that’s a 4-player co-op game.
Set to release next year is Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One. As the name so subtly hints, this new R&C feature revolves around 4-player action, a first in the series. At any moment you can have a buddy drop into the game online and play as Ratchet, Clank, Captain Quark or the evil Dr. Nefarious. Despite the focus on co-op play, the core R&C mechanics of platforming and blasting stuff with big weapons is intact.
And for those longtime R&C fans, All 4 One is indeed a direct follow-up of sorts to the previous R&C adventure A Crack in Time. Insomniac hasn’t discussed the exact story of All 4 One in great detail but I’m sure there’ll be a logical, at least in the R&C universe, reason as to why this is the next step for the R&C series.
As a Ratchet & Clank fan I’m happy with what I’ve seen so far. It definitely would’ve been nice if Insomniac gave the series a long break, but if they can deliver on giving us engaging co-op action then I’m all for more Ratchet & Clank goodness.
