A few weeks ago we got our first official piece of media for the highly awaited Mass Effect 2 in the form of a prelude trailer to E3. The trailer itself showed a decent amount of footage and was quite informative for the fans out there that have been aching for new info. While E3 is just two weeks away ME fans have some new info to tide them over until the eventual media blowout for the game.
The latest issue of OXM magazine has a very informative cover story on Mass Effect 2 that reveals some new info while raising a few questions some may have on the game. Perhaps the biggest question ME fans have about ME2 is whether they’ll play as Shepard, the protagonist from the first game who is hinted at being dead in ME2 based on the first teaser trailer for the game. Well the good news is that Shepard is not dead and players will once again be stepping into that role but only for a chunk of the game. It seems like Shepard will have a sizeable role in the story of the game and will be playable but there is a yet unannounced character that players will also be taking control of.
Shepard’s main mission in ME2 is to investigate the human civilizations that are mysteriously disappearing and the mission itself is being dubbed a “suicide mission.” So perhaps the beloved Shepard will perish or this is merely a ruse by BioWare.
According to a BioWare developer Shepard will also be getting a somewhat darker and grittier look to go along with how the game is delving into the darker and harsher realms of the Mass Effect universe. I’m sure fans of the series may be a bit worried hearing about Shepards revamp though I doubt BioWare will go Prince of Persia 2 on us and have the character look emo and have an unnecessary gruff voice.
The core story of ME2 involves civilization still trying to fend off the dangerous Reapers and this installment in the series will also deal with the Cerebus Corporation and who exactly runs it. BioWare is also promising that choices in the game will be more meaningful as main characters, aside from Shepherd, can die base on the decisions the player makes.
BioWare seems to be hyping up the story as they promise an ending that is much more meaningful and grand compared to the ending of Mass Effect 1. Being one of the five people who have yet to play ME1 I’m not sure whether this is hyperbole or if ME2 fans will be crapping their pants in anticipation of what the ending has in store.
The OXM article also discuses Thane, a new character to the series that is an alien assassin and is a potential party member. Supposedly seeing Thane in action during an assassination attempt will make players want to recruit him due to his skills. Further info on Thane paints him as a suave character and one screenshot shows him breaking a neck of a human. A suave deadly assassin sounds like a welcome addition to the world of Mass Effect.
Besides Thane, OXM was shown another potential party member in the form of a Salarian scientist. This scientist won’t be a pushover though as he is described as being tough and clever and is described as being the “Clint Eastwood of scientists.” So I’m assuming he’ll be a tough old geezer who is smart and can throw it down hardcore style.
It was also revealed that a few of the main characters and squadmates from ME1 would also be returning such as Joker. So if anyone had a favorite character from ME1 there’s a good chance of them popping up in ME2 in some form.
The article rounds things out with info on a few weapons such as one that can turn enemies into dust and another that is dubbed as the “nuke gun” since it clears out all enemies in the room. ME2 will also feature improved vehicle controls which is something that was a major issue for most while playing ME1 and there is also an improved loading system as the elevators of ME1 are being replaced with a new transit system that promises to better showcase where the player is and where they’re travelling to.
If ME fans have any lingering questions then you’ll have to wait until E3 as that’s when BioWare will show off the new transit system in action, the uncharted-worlds exploration, more info on the suave assassin Thane, who the other main playable character is and of course whether Shepard is really dead since for all we know the segments we play as him in the game could take place before the other story elements in the game.
