Captivate 2011: Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition and X Tekken

During Captivate 2011 today (Capcom’s annual Capcom-centric reveal show), several announcements were made regarding the future of the publisher’s long running fighting franchise: Street Fighter. It appears as though we’ll be getting two new Street Fighter games within the next year or so, as some new details were provided about both Street Fighter x Tekken, and a follow up to Super Street Fighter IV to include the new Arcade characters: Yun, Yang, Oni and Evil Ryu.

There’s been speculation for a long while in the forums (which I happen to be frequenting these days due to the Road to Evo series) regarding if the latest batch of content (new characters) would be a DLC for the consoles or another full disc release. For a long while everyone seemed to have settled in on the idea that there was NO WAY that Capcom would go to a full disc release again… Today we found out that it looks like they can and will. Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition will launch this Summer for the Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and Windows Live platforms.

Along with the aforementioned four new characters, the game offers up several other new features (which, c’mon now, they had to do to avoid a fan riot on a third release of SFIV). There will be updates for the Replay Mode, as well as for some Character Balancing.

To be fair, the announcement trailer also notes that the new characters/updates will be available for DLC on the consoles, which means we might not all need to run out and buy our third copy of the game… But wording throughout seems to imply there is going to be a disc as well (potentially so people that are just getting into it now don’t have to part out their package).

There are PLENTY more videos, images and details over on the Capcom Blog so if you just can’t get enough Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition, best to run over there as soon as humanly possible.

Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition is tentatively scheduled for a Summer 2011 release for PS3, X360 and Windows Live.

The second piece of news released in the Street Fighter realm as some new footage/information regarding the much discussed Street Fighter x Tekken game that will be coming out in 2012 (no release window information beyond the year so far, sorry guys). The game is rather impressive, considering it was written off at first glance (at least by me). Street Fighter x Tekken features a tag-team style gameplay, with a juggling system integrated that will bring something entirely new to long-term fans of the Street Fighter franchise (and hopefully just enough to keep the Tekken fans from frothing at the mouth until the release their baby Tekken x Street Fighter).

Truth be told I’m not entirely sold on the premise yet. The idea of merging these two, extremely different, fighting franchises into one game (or I suppose technically two) doesn’t work in my head, and will still just bring all kinds of moaning regarding Tekken fighters “not playing properly” or vice-versa. I’ll wait to keep a final opinion until more details/video has been provided, with a final judgment on the game passed when I go hands on… But in the meantime color me cautiously pessimistic on this one…

However, if you want more you can run on over to the Capcom Blog Post and get a bevy of additional images/videos.

Street Fighter x Tekken is slated for 2012 release on the Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and PC.
