Another Casting Announcement Is Finally Made for Mortal Kombat: Rebirth

Filming has finally begun on Mortal Kombat: Rebirth, the live-action MK web series based on the short film that leaked last year which has since been dubbed a fan film by Warner Brothers.  Last week we got early confirmation that MK: Rebirth was finally lensing as actress Jeri Ryan (Star Trek: Voyager) revealed her involvement in the project as she’ll be playing Sonya Blade.  Jeri joins Michael Jai-White who is also returning to MK: Rebirth as Jax, albeit the Police Detective version of Jax and not one with cybernetic arm implants.

WB has been keeping info pertaining to MK: Rebirth close to their chests, but today we finally have a new casting announcement for a fan favorite character. Joining the hyper real and ultra-gritty world of Mortal Kombat: Rebirth will be everyone’s favorite underground crime boss Kano, who will be portrayed by actor Darren Shahlavi.  A legit martial artist and stunt man, Darren has appeared in a few major projects in the past such as Donnie Yen’s Ip Man 2 and appears in the forthcoming Mission Impossible – Ghost Protocol.

Darren has appeared in a diverse array of films that while some may not be pure AAA fair, are still solid action flicks. Kano is one of those MK characters that people love for his trash talking and overall aura, so Darren may have some trouble topping the performance by the late Trevor Goddard in the original MK film as far as the fans are concerned. But Darren looks like a beast physically and knows what he’s doing when it comes to fight scenes so we could have some awesome action on our hands in Mortal Kombat: Rebirth.

Based on today’s news it does seem like we’re going to get a possible Kano vs. Sonya Blade fight or at least an encounter, and based on the tone MK: Rebirth seems to be going for, things will probably be violent and overly bloody – just how we like it.

The rest of the MK: Rebirth cast, which includes Sub-Zero, Liu Kang and reportedly Sindel, has yet to be revealed.  Mortal Kombat: Rebirth is slated for release on April 19th (Toasty Tuesday) so we should have a few more casting announcements before then.

A demo reel for Darren Shahlavi.
