Last year's E3 seemed to be all about the multiplayer experience. While we haven't returned to full couch-coop era of gaming, we did get a bunch of announcements of games that were going to revolve around four player cooperative play. One of the most surprising of those announcements, in my point of view, with the introduction of a new Fable game, Fable Legends.
Perhaps even more surprising, then the original multiplayer-focus announcement of the game, is the news that comes today: Fable Legends will be a Free-to-Play title.
According to the announcement, posted on the Fable Legends home site, the game will be entirely free to play (start to finish). The post even breaks down the ways in which they are trying to make this announcement as fair to free players as humanly possible.
You'll be able to play Fable Legends from beginning-to-end without spending a penny. That means you'll have access to the entirety of Fable Legends' storyline and all of the quests we release this year and forever.
Everything in Fable Legends that affects gameplay can be earned by simply playing the game.
Our goal is to have a happy community of players. We'll be updating the game with exciting new quests to play through, Heroes to play as, Villain creatures to control, and lots more.
It sounds like the core of the "pay" services in Fable Legends will crib the MOBA style store-system. There is intended to be a rotation of free characters that you're able to play as, but if you grow attached to a particular character you can then purchase that character so they are always available to you (regardless of who is on rotation).
Personally this will be the only reason that I own Fable Legends. While the coop gameplay that they elected for in this title is an interesting one, it probably wasn't going to be something that I would have thrown down $60 for.
Having the opportunity to play the game, in its entirety, for free definitely makes it worth the download.
