One of the big surprises made during Sony’s Gamescom presentation this week was the reveal of Tearaway, the new IP from Media Molecule. After giving the world the game that keeps on giving in the form of LittleBigPlanet, Media Molecule has gone on to create a game that features the same whimsical tone but is a bit more direct and dare I say it traditional in how it’s executed. It was a bit surprising that Media Molecule revealed that their new IP was a PlayStation Vita game, but fear not as the folks over in Guildford are indeed working on a second project.
It has been somewhat known for a while that since completing LBP2 Media Molecule had splintered into two teams, both of whom were developing new projects. Exactly what these projects were was the big question but as we found out earlier this week one of them turned out to be Tearaway for the Vita. Speaking at Gamescom this week Media Molecule’s Mark Healy once again confirmed that a second project is in the works. “We're working on a second project right now, and that's very much in an R&D phase,” said Healy at Gamescom.
I don’t think any of us will be truly surprised by this news but it at least confirms that no sudden shakeups occurred and that Media Molecule is still tinkering with something possibly big and possibly bound for the next-gen PlayStation. Media Molecule did spend $5 million dollars for R&D and I doubt all of that was used to developed Tearaway, which as a whole is a rather modest project seeing as how only 15 Media Molecule staffers are working on it.
Media Molecule co-founder Alex Evans went on to say this, “The other project is very much in an early stage and is a toy. You don't need to worry about it." So it seems like whatever Media Molecule is working on right now that we may not see it any time soon, but still that doesn’t mean we can’t do a bit of harmless guessing as to what it could be. It may be hard to imagine what Media Molecule will come up with next seeing as how they’re some of the most inventive developers out there, but a job posting that was made earlier this year sought someone with experience and passion for MMOs and social gaming. Such a thing of course got the gears in our heads turning at the possibility of Media Molecule doing a MMO.
Since Media Molecule is only in the early stages of their 2nd project it could be a full year or even two before we see it in action. I guess for now we’ll just have to wait patiently and simply look at how awesome Tearaway looks to bide our time until Media Molecule once again wows us.
