Putting a lot of stock into Twitter talk is never a good thing, especially when it comes from the master troll that is Hideo Kojima. A few exciting tidbits may be dropped here and there on Twitter or even from the likes of the legendary Kojima, but most of the time it’s just pointless chatter. Today we have something that doesn’t exactly fit in the pointless chatter department but at the same time isn’t an official thing by any stretch. More importantly said Twitter chatter involved two things I don’t think we would’ve ever put together: Hideo Kojima and Silent Hill.
Gamescom may be going on right now but neither Hideo Kojima nor the ever illusive FOX Engine are making an appearance. Kojima may have gone westward last month to attend the San Diego Comic Con to show mystery project X, but he isn’t walking the floor of Gamescom this week nor are any secret FOX Engine tech demos being shown. Such a thing hasn’t exactly stopped Kojima from doing a bit of hypothetical talking concerning the FOX Engine as he said this on his Twitter account, “It would be a scary game if we make Silent Hill game on FOX engine.”
Ok, it may not sound like a lot but Kojima then went into greater detail talking about how Silent Hill and the FOX Engine would benefit each other. “Silent Hill is in closed room setting and doesn't require full action so that we can focus on the graphic quality. Enemy doesn't have to be a lot or move fast. It only requires scariness by graphics and presentation. As being a creator making action game in open world, such game is very enviously attractive. Wish someone could create this on FOX engine", said Kojima.
Kojima’s comments concerning the FOX Engine and Silent Hill are especially interesting and so is the fact that former Silent Hill art director Masahiro Ito went on to favorite Kojima’s Tweets. By no means should we as gamers suddenly get excited for a new Silent Hill game as for as we know such a thing isn’t in development. With Silent Hill: Downpour underperforming it’s unknown where the series could go but it would be interesting if Kojima were to take the reins of the series or at the very least use some of his sway within Konami to have a Japanese team once again develop it.
In some ways the notion of a Silent Hill game being powered by the FOX Engine isn’t that far from being a reality since the engine is already being used in the next iteration of Pro Evolution Soccer. Hideo Kojima and his team at Kojima Production haven’t built the FOX Engine with only MGS/KP games in mind as it’ll likely become Konami’s go-to engine, unless history repeats itself and it’s ditched as was the engine of MGS4 becoming the standard within the company.
It would likely be amazing to see a Silent Hill game powered by the FOX Engine as the small glimpses we’ve seen through Kojima’s Tweets have been amazing. But of course such a thing will only become a reality if Konami gets its act together and has one of their internal studios develop the project as specialty engines usually aren’t shared with 3rd party developers (ex: Capcom and MT Framework).
Kojima’s own schedule may prevent him from actually getting hands-on with a would-be Silent Hill project, but it’s still possible he could oversee it in a light capacity as Kojima Productions did with Castlevania: Lords of Shadow. I guess it’s simply a waiting game to see what happens but since this is Konami we’re talking about it could be a long time before anything substantial comes to light.
For all my Silent Hill fans out there here’s a question: would you want Hideo Kojima involved in a Silent Hill game? Is Kojima’s general style too out there for a proper entry in the Silent Hill series or do you think he and his team would evoke the spirit that Team Silent did back in the day?
