In some ways it may seem like an easy way to make a profit, but HD collections have picked up a lot of steam this generation and to some they’re an absolute godsend on the PS3. Based on what we’ve received so far, a lot of the core franchises people hold dear to their heart have been re-released with a nice HD sheen applied to them and now the last major PlayStation franchise folks wanted to see released again is getting the special treatment.
Today Sony announced that this May gamers will be able to replay the first three Ratchet & Clank games in the Ratchet & Clank Collection. Comprising of the first three games (Ratchet Deadlocked isn’t getting any love) the collection will be complete with all the trimmings – 720P HD visuals, 3D support, Trophies, and one other bonus – the inclusion of online multiplayer in Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal. The fact that we’re getting a PS2 HD classic with online play is a pretty big deal as previous titles that supported such a thing back in the day have omitted that feature. I guess someone at Sony really wanted to push R&C or at least give it special treatment, which if I may add is proper since it’s the 10th anniversary of the game this year.
Beyond this reveal of the R&C Collection Sony or Insomniac haven’t announced their plans to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Ratchet & Clank. The release of the R&C Collection will certainly be a highlight but it would be nice for Sony to do something grand for one of their most popular franchises. I would say that a new R&C game would seem plausible, but if such a thing were to occur it likely won’t be from Insomniac given how the studio is now on a three year+ dev cycle with their core properties. Perhaps we’ll be lucky and see a new R&C game appear on the Vita or just see the franchise pushed heavily in Sony’s rumored PlayStation fighting game.
The Ratchet & Clank: Collection will be available to gamers on May 16th in Europe with a North American release occurring in the Fall.
