This thread will always have up to date information on the sites development. We will list features that are being developed and encourage you to post suggestions and comments below. We'll do our best to launch new features quickly, but our development team is well...me hahaha so some of the advanced features may take time to develop.
Features Being Developed Right Now:
User Blogs: Let users publish their own stories / articles. Other users can comment.
User Photos: Allow users to upload photos to their account and let others comment.
Spell Checker for rich-text: Allow users to check spelling of their posts using the rich-text editor
Admins Don't Get User Points: It seems silly for admins / editors to build user points, we would always be at the top of the list. Need to patch a fix for this. Moderators will still be able to get user points.
Twitter for Shogun - FIXED: News stories automatically post to our twitter page (need to setup twitter account right)
Twitter for users - Ready: Needs Blogs: When a user posts a new blog they can have the option to auto publish to their twitter.
Big Projects (will take much longer to build and launch):
Better User Profiles: Facebook style comment wall, buddy lists, private message system, recent blog display, user photo gallery windows.
Chakra Points as currency: Spend chakra points to enter site wide events and and contests.
Badges / Trophies: Users can earn trophies / badges for accomplishing certain things or participating in special site events.
Level System: Will likely be based on # of posts (especially if chakra can be spent). Will attach a level ranking / name to each user. Example: "LEVEL 2 - Apprentice."
So...whenever i think of something should i post it here instead of sending you messages?
Yup! This is our brainstorming thread. I'll respond to all suggestions and let you know if it's doable etc.
If you don't want your suggestion to be public you may use the Shogun Contact form.
Ok. i got some ideas.
this is nothing new to gaming websites or websites in general:
a forum based on catagories would be a good thing to do.
for now everything seems so unorganized, try and make forums sections like:
PS3
360
WII
PC
GENERAL GAMING
and/or
Killzone 2
Halo 3
and so on and so on (games)
so im not sure if this is a hard thing to do, i think its pretty easy (considering the things you've done already)
but try and do this, of course...if you want to.
We eventually will add more categorization to the forums but not until there is a lot more members. Otherwise I have a bunch of empty sub forums, which looks bad for the site. For now we'll keep running NeoGaf style with one main community area. Good suggestion though. That will eventually happen when we are big enough to use it.
Cool, then i better get back to advertisment again...
lol wow, looks like my suggestion came to work...

Yup! We had a bunch of new members join yesterday and new styles of topics were popping up. After thinking about it a bit more and having a discussion with Ian about some upcoming sections, an Off-topic specific forum seemed like a good idea to keep things organized.
Good Suggestion!
I sent an email on this before, but I think we should also implement a feature where we can show off our PS3 trophies or 360 achievements through the use of player cards (i.e. from PSN or playfire). It gives a great way to advertise the site, and show off our trophies. However, I do not know how easy or how hard this would be to implement this idea...
Hey llescaflownell,
First off VERY sorry if you sent an email I did not reply to you. I probably didn't get it. I was having some mail issues that should have been cleared up now.
I would love to do something like that and will have to look into it. Unfortunately i don't believe Sony or Xbox's trophies / achievements are open source API. So I don't think I can build them.
I do not use either of these services myself, but if someone knows more about this or if you ever want a custom theme for your player cards (if they allow it) I would be more then happy to whip one up for you.
I believe playfire.com allows custom themes, so maybe a good way to advertise would be through the use of player cards. I dunno, just an option for others to take, since I know some people on this site use player cards (myself included).
I'm looking into those playfire cards. I'll be trying to design something soon! Thanks for the tip!
If you can make one of those, ill be using it on the forums i use.
I tried putting the name in my trophy card & this is how it came out

I suck at most things that have to do with computers anyway so hopefully you can do better. I was gonna replace kill me or die tryin' with the name of the site but kill me or die tryin' is just too freaking cool
I agree with God0fWaR, organization is ESSENTIAL on the success of a website. Just look at Amazon.com, look at the departments it has and all the categories.
Update to status post.
Auto Twitter posting now live. Issue set to fixed.
Hey C4, is it possible to add an alternative site/forum theme/skin? Like how Gamespot has both a light/dark theme? I'm more of a fan of dark backgrounds with lighter text; it's easier on the eyes I believe.
A dark theme would certainly be nice; definitely something to think about, but I have to say it's a pretty low priority thing to be fair.
Yeah, themes would be great as it will let people have the website with a color they prefer.
New skins are actually really easy for me to implement but I need to learn how to make them user specific. If I turned them on the way I have it now it would change for everyone hahaha. I won't be able to look into this and release them until I finish that profile update. But it is something I'm looking into
. Thanks for the suggestions.
May I suggest a List or Sticky topic where users can post ther login names, system and the games they play so we can easily add each other?

If you would like to start a forum topic in the game section feel free to. If it gets popular I'll sticky it.
However, once the new profiles are finished I will have a spot in each profile to add your Gamer ID's etc
I got another idea on my head.
The NEWS, FORUMS CONTACT bar on the top of site is good, but you should have it in the custom Shogun text, cuz it looks pretty dull and stuff, having it in the shogun text would pimp the looks.
tell me what u think.
I may change the font and make it a bit bigger, but my links will always be text. Google and other web crawlers can not read images like they can text. Having purely image based links is very bad for search engine optimization. I would like to change it up a bit eventually but until things that are broken/missing are fixed I can't focus on changing stuff that works perfect. When the time is right I'll mock up some designs and show them to the community before implementing them.
Yet another suggestion:
Having a 'Random Poll of the week' would be something nice to do, you know just add it to the left where the "Unread" things are.
Having polls like:
"Did you like the Wolverine Movie?"
"Do you want blahbalh in shogungamer?"
just some examples.
Good idea Dan. I will look into doing that it's easy to do. I'd want to find an easy way to set them up though so that someone else other then me could be in charge of it. I'm really busy getting a development site setup so I can build the new hot fire profiles! (which by the way is up so I can start building!)
Great, im glad you like it, im pretty sure you can just make the poll, and then editors can change it to what they want every week.
I think you should put a section in either the main news section or the forum that has the stories that are being worked on that will be put up in the news section. That way we can see what you guys are working on and we dont start a thread that happens to coincide with a story that will be eventuallu be put up. This will help certain thread being locked or taken down.

I'm trying to find a better way to deal with this issue, although it's not really an issue. I'd like to find a way to just link the two things. I'm going to stop locking people's threads for this reason and perhaps just post a comment in the thread if there's a news story posted after the fact. If a forum thread is made AFTER we post a news story...depending on how similar / Identical it is to the front page story I may lock it as duplicate content.
I don't really see the big deal about it upon further thought on the topic.
I think it would be awesome if, come some point in the year, we held a Shogun Gamer Awards (or whatever) allowing site members to vote for their favourite titles for the year. I realise that you're doing a lot Corey, but this is something that needn't been addressed until the end of the year.

Status: FIXED
Internet Exploder Browser Issues.
There are some known issues with Internet Explorer 6 and 7. IE 8 is coming out soon and should fix those if you update so this is why I'm not fixing them right now. After most of the above listed features are on the site and working I will look into fixing IE bugs. From what I can tell nothing is broken in IE, just some of the theming is funny. Should still function though. If a feature is physically broken please report it here. Thanks!
