Its coming up to a year since I got my PS3 and when I recently check the storage, I noticed that I am down to 10 GB of free space left. The most disturbing aspect of this is that I don't download movies or any type of media to my PS3 and all of data currently eating up space is game data. Now I am thinking on whether or not if I should upgrade the HDD on my PS3. My main concern of updating my HDD is transferring my game saves to a new HDD the other stuff I can just re-download. I know many of you guys have upgraded your HDD so I'm wondering what is the best and easy way of going about this especially getting my game saves over to the old HDD to a new one. Your various inputs would be greatly appreciated.
Heres the helpful video that showed me how,and i think JD posted this a while ago. But Shaolin pretty much said everything. HDD are cheap for the PS3,found mine on ebay for 80 bucks,320 GB.Just make sure its formatted to FAT 32 or else it wont work....
Just delete every type of media you have and back up the game saves, which is all that really matters.
About the firmware problem, just wait for a new one before upgrading.
Do you know what the say with more space right? The more space you have is the more stuff you will put on your harddrive until you see that isn't enough also (LOL). I have a 500gb harddrive in my PS3 and only have 200gb lefted on it and I buy games every week from off the PSN so by the end of the year I will need a new one so I am think about a 10tb I should be good with that (LOL).
Ya you could just copy your save game files onto a thumb drive and then install your new HDD and copy back your save files. Although a few games you can't copy your save file, ie Demon's Souls.
I use an external HDD so all the movies/videos/etc I put on my PS3 previously I just put on the external and play them via that, that freed up a lot of space on mine.

Yeah, I would just upgrade it. I upgraded mine just to not have to worry about running out of space.
If you have an external hard drive formatted to FAT32, you can backup your PS3's data through settings -> system settings -> backup utility -> back up.
Alternatively, you can use a flash drive and just copy game saves over to that. I'm guessing that most of your PS3 hd space is taken up by installs? Otherwise, the flash drive process can be lamesauce (flash drive is full -> cut/paste data to computer -> full again -> cut/paste to computer -> get rest of data on computer/flash drive -> put flash drive data from computer/old ps3 hd on new PS3 hd once installed).
By the way, the one I upgraded to was this one and I converted the old hard drive into an external drive with this
