Spider-man: Edge of Time [Review]

Overall Feeling: 

Fans of Spider-man as a series may appreciate the all-star voice-acting cast that bridges together the iconic Peter Parkers of the past and the numerous nods to the franchise's hertitage. It's just unfortunate the whole thing is wrapped around lacklustre combat and a game that forgot that it's swinging that brings the true visceral thrill of being Spider-man to life. 

The Pros: 

+The best voice-acting cast of a Spider-man game, ever.

+Tons of references to the TV series and comics, both braisen and obscure.

+Stellar writing that takes advantage of the classic Spider-man wit and intelligence.

The Cons: 

-Bland combat that forsakes the classic free-flow style of the previous series.

-Everything takes place inside in-doors which means there's not a lot of room to swing.

-Everything 'game' about the title feels uninspired, and worse like a back-track for the series as a whole.

To provide this review with a little bit of a context, Spider-man has been the only comic book series I've followed with any regularity since the early 90s when I first got into comics. While my interest in other series waned, and I found myself focusing more on other pursuit, Spider-man has always had a knack for swinging me back around and keeping my interest over these many years. Oh, and you can add on to that the fact that a number of Spider-man games will forever be on the top of my lists: Spider-man 2, Maximum Carnage, Separation Anxiety, etc.

X-Men Destiny [Review]

Overall Feeling: 

Everything you will experience in X-Men Destiny you have had before, and better.  The repetitive button mashing combat, the basic dialogue choices, the subpar levelling up system all fail to bring anything fresh to the table.  That's not to say that there is no fun to be had in (insert developer hear) title.  If you are indeed an X-Men fan you still might have to dig deep, but the enjoyable moments will happen.

The Pros: 

+X-men characters look great and they use a healthy variety of them.

+Certain moments in the game pay off and you're left feeling happy that you are a nerd.

+Voice acting for all the main characters feels proper.

The Cons: 

-None of the elements of gameplay feel polished.

-Way too much unused potential for this universe.

-Levels are very linear with a ton of invisible walls.

-None of your choices in the game really feel like they have an affect.

Some of my fondest memories as a kid were waking up on Saturday mornings, getting a bowl of the cereal that had the most sugar in it, and sitting a foot away from the TV and watching the 1990's X-Men cartoons.  So you should understand the excitement I originally felt over a year ago when an X-Men action/RPG was announced for current Gen consoles.  You might also, upon further reading, understand my disappointments with how it simply falls short...on almost every occasion.

Battlefield 3 [Review]

Overall Feeling: 

Battlefield has always been a series focused on co-operative team play, massive battles encompassing land, sea, and air as well as a showcase of a variety of different military vehicles. The 'third' instalment of the series doesn't diverge from the tried and true formula, but does make some much-needed tweaks to the over-all gameplay to advance the series into the modern generation of FPS titles and beyond.

The Pros: 

+Team-focused combat sees a return, and gets some balance tweaks.

+Impressive graphical upgrades over the series predacessors. 

+A more compelling single-player campaign then previous ventures.

+Bigger better battles that let you take the fight on virtually every front.

The Cons: 

-The main story feels like it cribs a little to heavily from Call of Duty.

-A couple of bad-apples can ruin the experience real quick, as you are reliant on your teammates.

-The flashlight/laser sight system can be abused for annoyance VERY easily.

Outside of the Bad Company sub-series, Battlefield has never been a series that's been held up by its deep or interesting story. What story was offered in the games previous was little more than an introduction to the mechanics of the game; an extended tutorial if you would. That's probably the reason why Battlefield 3's story-mode isn't getting a whole lot of focus from reviewers. Reviewers and gamers alike will be jumping into the game with one focus in mind, and everything else as a secondary.

Batman: Arkham City [Review]

Overall Feeling: 

The fact of the matter is that if you haven’t played the original Arkham Asylum, you missed out. If you did, you probably already own this game, and might have even wrapped it before me. Either way, this is a stellar title that absolutely everyone should have to play to continue holding the title “gamer,” “geek,” “nerd,” or even “Batman Fan.” 

The Pros: 

+Improved free-flow combat system.

+Enhanced 'side-quest' system, featuring all of Gotham's fave villains.

+Bigger, badder world of Batman to explore.

+One of the single most impressive Batman stories of any medium, ever. 

+Awesome new gadgets that change-up the combat and stealth.

+Everything in the game has a purpose, time-line and consiquence, making even mundane collecting tasks become 'life or death' situations.

The Cons: 

-Review scales simply don't go high enough to represent this game accurately.

It would probably be a little bit of an understatement to say that Rocksteady had a bit of a high bar to hurdle, expectations wise, when they decided to release a sequel to Arkham Asylum. It was a game that was heralded by many game critics as the best of the superhero (and for Batman I do use that term loosely) genre. Beyond that it was considered to be one of the best games of 2009, winning all kinds of awards on all kinds of gaming enthusiast sites, including a game of the year nod from Shogun Gamer.

Resident Evil: Code Veronica X HD [Review]

Overall Feeling: 

One of great Resident Evil titles that still stands out after 10 years; with or without that HD shine.

The Pros: 

+ Great Resident Evil nostalgic gaming

The Cons: 

-Clunky controls.

-HD makeover doesn't really improve the graphics.

Back in 2000, Capcom released Resident Evil Code: Veronica for the Sega Dreamcast. After seeing two more ports one for the Sony's PlayStation 2 in 2001 and the other for Nintendo's Gamecube in 2003, which of course was when the "X" was added to original title, Resident Evil Code: Veronica X once again rises from the grave to scare up PS3 and Xbox 360 owners this time in High Definition.

Resident Evil 4 HD [Review]

Overall Feeling: 

A re-release of one of the most successful Resident Evil game in its franchise, Resident Evil 4 HD is a worthy download complete with a HD makeover and some new achievements/trophies to unlock.

The Pros: 

+ New HD Shine

+ Achievements & Trophies Added

The Cons: 

- Some control issues

It has been six years since the initial release of Capcom's Resident Evil 4 for the Nintendo GameCube, and eventual port to PlayStation 2. Now Capcom is providing the option once again to either replay the experience all over again or take part in the adventure for the very first time.

RAGE [Review]

Overall Feeling: 

The unique character design, impressive world that has been created and stunning use of idTech5 along with their 'megatextures' do little more than provide a breath-taking mask to otherwise bland shooter. At the end of the day RAGE feels little more than a re-skinned version of DOOM made by a group of people that were inspired by Mad Max and Borderlands.

The Pros: 

+Unique story telling

+Graphically impressive

+Awesome character design

+Unique weapons

+Solid co-op experience

+Ammo types drastically influence battle

The Cons: 

-Mediocre Feeling FPS

-Buggy, especially without install

-Doesn't have a real 'wow' factor beyond its look

-Repeative mission structure

-'Open world' is just a juncture between repeating zones

RAGE is something that I've been personally waiting for on bated breath. When it was originally announced back at QuakeCon 2007, it was the 'mega textures' and 'idTech5' showcase that started to blow everyone away. Beyond that though, the game was looking like it was going to take everything that Borderlands had already done, and ramped it up with all kinds of improvements to the style and specifically the graphics of the game.

Dead Nation: Road to Devastation [Review]

Overall Feeling: 

Dead Nation: Road to Devastation is what more DLC add-ons should be – simple, to the point and cheap to buy.  Now focusing on a round based branching path adventure, Road to Devastation adds a wee bit of strategy to the Dead Nation experience as it allows gamers to somewhat tailor their zombie killing experience.  Even without the addition of any major new weapons or enemy types, Road to Devastation is DLC that’s worthy of forking your cash over since it’s well made and adds tremendously upon the base product.

The Pros: 

+ Branching paths add a lot to the game and offer a nice amount of variety amongst each other.

+ Multi-kill score mechanic is nice and further adds an arcade dimension to the game.

+ Level variety may not be that different compared to what Dead Nation already offered us, but there are still a lot of cool set-piece moments in the game.


 

The Cons: 

- Not being able to save in between rounds and having to restart upon dying is a pain.

- Would’ve preferred if level variety (art design, setting) was handled better.

The ever continuing zombie fad may be something that is further drawing the ire of gamers and people in general, but every now and then we do get a gem out of whatever undead mayhem surfaces.  There still is definitely an easy route that video game developers can take with their undead action but for some reason Dead Nation just clicked with people. At first it seemed like the game had two strikes against itself seeing as how it’s a twin-stick shooter and a zombie game that doesn’t have the name Resident Evil bandied about anywhere.

BloodRayne: Betrayal [Review]

Overall Feeling: 

Betrayal feels like a positive move forward for the BloodRayne series overall, but the game itself doesn't go far enough to buck with the game's middling past. The art and concept are brilliant, but the actual feel of the game and combat system do leave something to be desired.

The Pros: 

+Side-scrolling is a great new direction for the series.

+The art is unique, and eye-catching.

+Shorter/Downloadable title seems a better place for BloodRayne.

The Cons: 

-Ridiculous scoring system.

-Lack of tutorials/guidance.

-Very mediocre revamp of an already middling game-series.

A couple of weeks back saw the return of Bloodrayne. The good news is that it is a far departure from the previous games and movies (if you were a fan of either, I'm sorry for you). The bad news though is that it doesn't bring anything all that compelling on interesting to the table.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution [Review]

Overall Feeling: 

Deus Ex: Human Revolution comes as close to deliverying on its campaign promises as any game has ever dared before. The story line is an epic web of conspiracies and lies interwoven with a question of humanity and what it means to each player. By the end of the game you'll have created your own individual Adam Jensen whose final choice may surprise even you. 

The Pros: 

+Brilliant sci-fi noir-esque story.

+Interesting and relatable characters.

+Plenty of replay value.

+Deep and expansive world with plenty to do and see.

+An almost unpressidented level of 'play how you want'.

The Cons: 

-The game does heavily favor stealth, if that's now how you play/wanted to play you can miss out on some of the side-quests/rewards of the game.

Just over two years ago now I was lead into a private booth on the floor of E3 to catch my first glimpse of Human Revolution. The demo that I saw then would set an impossibly high bar that no game could ever match. The demo show cased gorgeous cinematics, stealth-oriented gameplay, ridiculous take-downs in the form (in single, double, and five-at-a-time varieties) combined with dialog from the development team; which wound up selling me with one quote: "You can play through the entire game without killing anyone."
