Far Cry 4 [Review]

Overall Feeling: 

Coming from Far Cry 3, the gameplay feels very much the same, but with a couple of new additions. However, the environment, the weapon selection, and the incredible feeling of lighting forests on fire and stomping on enemy soldiers while riding an elephant does a lot to detract from the negatives and deliver an overall bad-ass experience.

The Pros: 

+ You are a living murder machine
+ Beautifully rendered environment
+ Easy to grasp gameplay
+ You can ride an elephant, what more do you want

The Cons: 

- Gameplay can be very samey from Far Cry 3 to 4
- Hunting can be made almost too easy with the inclusion of Bait
- Outposts and Bell Towers are a little bit repetitive

A lot of games are doing moral/amoral story-lines now. I totally get the appeal as well. Titles like the Fallout series really made you feel the full weight of a bad decision, be it through popping a cap in one dude and having a bunch of normally-friendly NPC's come gunning for you or by blowing up a small town and making your daddy express his disappointment in you. Today, I'm going to celebrate Far Cry 4 which allows you to be a total dick to the oppressed people of Kyrat, and totally get away with it.

Halo: The Master Chief Collection [Review]

Overall Feeling: 

A collection of four Halo games should have been a cause for much rejoicing for Xbox fans. However, somewhere down the development road the team behind the game collection forgot what made Halo successful the first time around: Multiplayer. Without a working multiplayer at launch (or indeed for a week afterwards) this game feels half-complete.

The Pros: 

+Halo 2's visual upgrade is nothing short of stunning.
+Having the ability to go through all 4 main Halo games again is awesome.
+The menu navigation and selection is slick and easy to use.

The Cons: 

-The game was released before it was completed.
-Multiplayer is still having issues getting started a week later.
-Playlists should be customizable, instead of just preset.

While we might not hit every single game for review, I'm sure some of you have been wondering where the Halo: Master Chief Collection review has been. It's understandable, especially considering the fact that we've live streamed several hours of the game on our Twitch stream. So here's the down low: We received a review copy of the game about 2 weeks before it came out, however there were issues with the multiplayer/co-op that were going to be addressed in a patch.

Fantasia: Music Evolved [Review]

Overall Feeling: 

Fantasia: Music Evolved maintains the core-concept of the original musical-animation by providing an introduction to the concepts of orchestral music through stunning visuals, but adapts it for the modern generation by including you in the story. However the technical issues of the game hold it back from being a truly emersive experience, or competitive for the older audiences.

The Pros: 

+Fantasic Concept
+Awesome Character Design
+Intuitive Menu Navigation
+Great Creative Outlet for Childern

The Cons: 

-Technical Issues Where the Kinect Can't Keep Up
-A Lot of the Remixes are far Worse Then the Original Songs Themselves.

Years ago, I was visiting a friend’s house, just hanging out and playing video games… typical Friday night stuff for nerds like us. He pulled out a game called Amplitude, which at the time I had never even heard of. We booted it up, the premise and controls were explained and then we were off and running. I instantly fell in love with the concept, got my own copy and then eventually its successor Frequency. Ever since that first game I’ve been absolutely in love with Harmonix and their ideas on game design.

Sunset Overdrive [Review]

Overall Feeling: 

Ready for the shortest "overall feeling" I've ever written? Sunset Overdrive is fun, pure and simple.

The Pros: 

+Addictive World Traversal Mechanics
+Fantastically Funny Story-line, Dialog, and Characters
+Awesome Character Creation and Customization
+So. Much. Fun.

The Cons: 

-The uh... logo screen is a bit busy-looking?
-People keep comparing it to Infamous, for some reason...
Seriously though, there are no complaints here!

Before I received my copy of Sunset Overdrive for review, I had watched a developer introduction to the game at one of the conventions who was talking about the concept for the game. It’s stuck with me the whole way through; in particular one specific line.

I don’t remember the quote word-for-word, but the basic gist of it was: “We wanted everything about the game to be fun, even dying is fun.”

Forza Horizon 2 [Review]

Overall Feeling: 

Horizon 2 feels like the core concept for the design team was two fold: Freedom and Fun. The game allows you wishfulfillment in the form of not only a cross-continental road trip with the breath-taking beauty of Europe but a phenominal level of car customization to make exactly the kind of ride you've only ever dreamed of (unless you're super rich).

The Pros: 

+In Depth Car Customization
+Wide Open Road and Exploration
+Beautiful Scenary to Drive Through
+An Impressive and Ever-Expanding Car List

The Cons: 

-There Could Be More Options for Upgrades
-The Road Trip Story Line Progresses Too Quickly (if you stick with one car class)

Ever since I was a child I was influenced by my father's extensive love and knowledge of automobiles. It shaped how I viewed transportation as a whole, and for decades since has been the root of my fascination with classic cars. It’s a hobby that I would absolutely love to have as my own, but as a mere writer there’s no way I’ll be able to collect like the comedians with millions in the bank to fuel their passion for automotives and its sports.

Thankfully as gamers, we’re not wanton for venues of wish-fulfillment.

Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor [Review]

Overall Feeling: 

From incredibly fun combat and how rewardingly violent Talion deals with his Uruk enemies, to roaming around vast parts of Mordor in a variety of acrobatic ways, I had a surprisingly great time with this title. Shadow of Mordor's key feature, the newly introduced Nemesis System, was for sure the standout here and the source of most of my mischievous fun I had.  The side missions can get repetitive and the story isn't anything spectacular, but there was more than enough to have me coming back and decapitating Uruk after Uruk.

The Pros: 

+Nemesis System is excellent.
+Combat is an absolute blast.
+RPG elements aren’t deep, but very well used.

The Cons: 

-Side quests get repetitive.
-Story is nothing amazing.

Destiny [Review]

Overall Feeling: 

Destiny is a really good game that shys just short of true greatness by being a fairly standard feeling FPS game at its core. It has the potential to be a really great game franchise down the road, but the current iteration is held back by a lot of little things that annoy slightly, like taking a lovely family vacation but not being able to ignore the mosquitos. 

The Pros: 

+ Solid mechanics

+ Addictive 'bread-crumb' style gameplay

+ Large, expansive scenes to explore

+ Plenty of varity in game modes and play styles

The Cons: 

- Derivitive feeling story and characters

- Nagging UI/flow issues

- Character fatigue online (not enough customization)

The amount of hype that Destiny has been able to generate, for a new IP, is simply unprecedented.

Some of that is natural; the fans saw something new and exciting, and they flocked to it.

Some of that is manufactured. The amount that was spent on marketing the game was a little beyond ridiculous as well… But it all in all it’s paid off.

Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon [Review]

Overall Feeling: 

Blood Dragons is a love-letter to b-movie sci-fi films from the 1980s. It is genius in its satirical take on the iconic sub-culture of the material itself as well as video games in general. Fans of action movies, the 80s, satire, or just goofy action games in general will fall in love with this game before the tutorial is completed.

The Pros: 

+Great sense of humor. 

+Sense of loyality its inspiration (80s action films).

+Same great gameplay of its predecessor (Far Cry 3). 

+Stunning visuals (both the neon in-game, and the 16-bit cut-scenes).

The Cons: 

-Character customization has been almost completely removed to make way for a straight forward leveling system (earn a level, get a new game-choosen ability).

Far Cry: Blood Dragon is a perfect, or rather the only, example of what fans of the 80s sci-fi/action b-movie genre have been hoping for out of video games for about the last 30 years. Of course that’s a pretty ridiculous standard for Ubisoft to try and live up to… but it was refreshing to see how serious, or rather not-serious, the team building the game took the project.

[Review] WWE 13 - One of the Worst Games in Recent Memory.

Overall Feeling: 

The fact this game was released is astounding. Any positive points from WWE Attitude Mode or player creation are fully eclipsed by an absurd number of bugs and poor game design.

The Pros: 

+ Attitude Era Nostalgia Bomb.

+ Deep and impressive player content creation tools. 

The Cons: 

- Frequent game crashes.

- Unpolished and riddled with glitches and bugs.

- Online servers keep erasing data.

- 3GB save file on PS3 makes PS+ Cloud storage useless.

- Broken Universe mode design.

- Pay-Per-View matches have no purpose.

- Terrible game audio issues.

THQ's latest installment of their long lived World Wrestling Entertainment licence hit the shelves on October 30th 2012. While many publications, blog and fans rushed to get their reviews of WWE 13 up on day one, I waited. Patiently.  Now that we’re over a month since its release, I'm rather glad I sat on this and really took the time to explore this game. 

Forza Horizon [Review]

Overall Feeling: 

A brilliant blend between high-stakes, full-throttle racing and meditative country drive in your dream car, Forza Horizon takes a well-loved, established franchise and dares to do something a little different. Fans of the franchise may miss the game’s simulation edge, but for a game that offers so much variety strung together, quite nicely, with a core concept that holds throughout, it’s hard to stay angry at the decision to change for more than a couple minutes into the game.

The Pros: 

+Intelligent use of the world, environment, menus and audio to create a unified theme throughout.

+Combines the best of both worlds: full-throttle super-speed racing, and a relaxing Sunday drive through the country.

+Slightly more relaxed atmosphere/controls than the previous games, lowering the barrier of entry for new/casual players.

The Cons: 

-Some of the “challenges” push the boundaries of casual into straightforward boredom, i.e. the photo challenges (where you just need to get your car to a visually stimulating point without wrecking the car, without any form of time challenge).

Forza has spent the last seven years working its way into my heart. Originally a franchise I passed off as Microsoft’s attempt to be Gran Turismo. It’s grown over the years in leaps and bounds, the most recent iteration, Forza 4, becoming one of my favorite racing games of all time. When Horizon was announced, so shortly after the launch of four, I found myself wondering if it was a bit too soon for a sequel.
