Up NXT

One thing that I'm constantly asked about by customers is "Why are they removing features?" This is, of course, in regard to the current-gen versions of certain games. It happened with the September release of NHL 15, and it's happening again with the upcoming November 18th release of WWE 2k15.

Dying Light - A Look At The Future Of Zombie Brain-Bashing

Zombies! A genre that is as undying as its slow shuffling stars.

Developer Techland, no stranger to zombie lore with their first outing Dead Island (which I was a big fan of) is creating a mighty ambitious open world zombie playground to explore, raise a little (more) hell and if a healthy dose of luck is on your side, maybe even survive. Maybe...

Far Cry 4: Unnecessary Animal Slaughter Simulator 2K14

As the sun set over Rook Island, I looked upon my works with joyful fatigue as the once-beleaguered native inhabitants celebrated their newfound freedom from the clutches of drug-fuelled madmen. I sniped soldiers, set C4 traps for the unaware enemy, and blew up Galapagos turtles for funsies. I wore my magical tattoos with pride as I vengefully tore through the jungles with naught but my knife and my almost pathological thirst for virtual blood.

Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor [Review]

Overall Feeling:

From incredibly fun combat and how rewardingly violent Talion deals with his Uruk enemies, to roaming around vast parts of Mordor in a variety of acrobatic ways, I had a surprisingly great time with this title. Shadow of Mordor's key feature, the newly introduced Nemesis System, was for sure the standout here and the source of most of my mischievous fun I had.  The side missions can get repetitive and the story isn't anything spectacular, but there was more than enough to have me coming back and decapitating Uruk after Uruk.

The Pros:

+Nemesis System is excellent.
+Combat is an absolute blast.
+RPG elements aren’t deep, but very well used.

The Cons:

-Side quests get repetitive.
-Story is nothing amazing.

TL;DR - Sept 22 - Steam Upgrade, USFIV Omega, 900p Xbone

Hello and good-evening for those late-nighters that have stumbled in upon the return of Shogun Gamer and in specific it’s semi-reoccurring truncation of the news named TL;DR. If you’re joining us here for the first time in this segment the principle is simple enough: There are some news segments that get launched out there that aren’t big enough for our editorialized articles, but we still feel the need to bring to you in some form.

Mighty No. 9 [First Impressions]

A couple of years back I had the opportunity to attend GDC (Game Developers Conference) thanks to my time here at Shogun. To this day I hold it to be the epitome of gaming conventions. If you have the opportunity to attend, you simply must.

Destiny [Review]

Overall Feeling:

Destiny is a really good game that shys just short of true greatness by being a fairly standard feeling FPS game at its core. It has the potential to be a really great game franchise down the road, but the current iteration is held back by a lot of little things that annoy slightly, like taking a lovely family vacation but not being able to ignore the mosquitos.

The Pros:

+ Solid mechanics

+ Addictive 'bread-crumb' style gameplay

+ Large, expansive scenes to explore

+ Plenty of varity in game modes and play styles

The Cons:

- Derivitive feeling story and characters

- Nagging UI/flow issues

- Character fatigue online (not enough customization)

The amount of hype that Destiny has been able to generate, for a new IP, is simply unprecedented.

Some of that is natural; the fans saw something new and exciting, and they flocked to it.

Some of that is manufactured. The amount that was spent on marketing the game was a little beyond ridiculous as well… But it all in all it’s paid off.

PlayStation 4 And The Return Of Sony [E3 2013]

The day had finally come in which it was time for Sony to step up to the plate; amounting to what was the ultimate do or die moment.  While not on the teetering cusp they once were during the early days of the PlayStation 3, Sony nonetheless had a lot to prove with the showing of the PlayStation 4 at E3 2013.

Thief Debut Trailer Finally Comes Out Of The Shadows

A bunch of malarkey may have transpired today considering it’s the fools parade that is April Fool’s Day, yet Square Enix has decided to get a bit serious. No, badass undercover cop extraordinaire Wei Shen hasn’t returned in a Sleeping Dogs follow-up as we instead have our first “look” at the new Thief title.
