2014 Game Retrospective - Part 3

Last week, under the shroud of a Skype call, Shogun Gamer staff began the process of narrowing down the best games of 2014. Thankfully due to an abundance of re-masters this past year, we were able to move through our deliberations with relative easy and speed.

Next week we'll unveil the full list and its winners, along with an accompanying podcast so you can hear for yourself how each call was made. For now, let's keep running down some of the big moments (possitive and negative) of 2014, shall we?

Shinji Mikami and Bethesda Unveil The Evil Within

The teasing done by Bethesda Softworks has finally ended and as expected we have the debut of Shinji Mikami’s new survival horror game. Formerly known as Zwei, Shinji’s new game under his Tango Gameworks studio is now dubbed The Evil Within; a title that’s rather fitting of the horrors that are promised to be experienced within the title.

Thief Debut Trailer Finally Comes Out Of The Shadows

A bunch of malarkey may have transpired today considering it’s the fools parade that is April Fool’s Day, yet Square Enix has decided to get a bit serious. No, badass undercover cop extraordinaire Wei Shen hasn’t returned in a Sleeping Dogs follow-up as we instead have our first “look” at the new Thief title.

Rumors Surface For Batman: Arkham Origins (Grain of Salt Time)

Holy contradictory news Batman!  Some interesting details have arisen concerning the future of the Batman: Arkham video game franchise that could be legit or simply a case of wires being crossed.

Suda 51 Teases Next Game From Grasshopper Manufacture

Grasshopper Manufacture may not have even finished their upcoming game yet, but the studio is already prepping and discussing, albeit of a cryptic nature, their next title.  While talking about the studio’s forthcoming PS3/Xbox 360 action game Killer Is Dead, GhM mastermind and overall creative genius Suda 51 revealed a few key pieces of info regarding the next game from the studio.

Battlefield 4 Debut Footage Shows Shooting, Explosions, and Forced Drama [Video]

As expected, EA went on to announce Battlefield 4 in a grand fashion last night to live up to the popularity the series has gained for the past decade or so.  The existence of a new Battlefield game isn’t too much of a shocker considering we’ve known about it since BF3 was released and it has been incessantly teased for the last week or so.

So other than not knowing how far DICE was aiming to push the visual bar and up the action, it was business as usual for the Battlefield franchise and that’s apparent in this rather dull gameplay footage.

Star Wars 1313 Reportedly On Hold [Rumor]

Even though it’s one of the most recognizable and popular franchises in the world, Star Wars simply can’t catch a break when it comes to the world of video games.  After starting out strong in the mid 1990s, the Star Wars franchise has slowly declined in recent years through a derth of interesting releases. Now there's another disturbance in the Force which could result in yet another Star Wars being cancelled.

Assassin's Creed IV Details Leaked, Set To Include Assassin Pirates

Now on a yearly schedule like that of the Madden and Call of Duty series, it shouldn’t be a surprise that Ubisoft has a new Assassin’s Creed in the works.  The third entry, at least numbered entry, in the series had gamers in two distinct camps when it was released last year, yet here we are on the verge of yet another installment being prepped which appears to be more of the same.

Take Two Officially Acquires WWE Game License, Yuke's Returning To Develop Titles

Wrestling fans will no doubt be in a bad mood considering the latest news to happen in the world of the WWE. The newfound depression amongst wrasslin fans isn’t because CM Punk is no longer the champ, but instead pertains to the world of WWE video games.  Previously it appeared as if a new era of wrestling games was set to begin due to the closure of THQ, but now it appears that we could simply be in store for more of the same – a predicament that plagues the wrestling industry itself.

Sony Readies Next-Gen PlayStation Reveal (Event Dated + Controller Rumors)

The revolution will be televised, or in this case streamed, since we’re now on the cusp of Sony revealing the next-gen PlayStation. No, we haven’t suddenly entered a time warp of sorts since this isn’t late May or early June, the period in which big announcements are made prior to E3.

Instead of waiting for the once big platform of unveiling the latest game goodness at E3 with everyone else, Sony is prepping the revealing of the new PlayStation for next month.  So yeah, it’s officially time to hop aboard the hype train.
