Brain Teasers, A New Geek-Themed Variety Show

The Vancouver nerd-community seems divided into two halves, if the conversations I have with friends (who identify as nerd) are any indication. There seems to be one group that is completely unaware of the bustling hive of nerd-activity that Vancouver is, and a second half that feels overwhelmed by the amount of options we have for nerdy night outs.

Canadian Video Game Awards Winners

Yesterday saw the return of The Canadian Videogame Awards, for the second year in Vancouver (accompanying Fan Expo) and its fourth annual run (in total). The show was bigger and better than ever, running much more smoothly then we experienced last year and with a greater focus on the hype of it all. Participation from the audience was encouraged, and the whole thing just felt a little more loose and fun than last year.

Canada Cup Gaming - April Duels II [Wrap-Up]

This past weekend Vancouver (…or technically Richmond) played host to one of its very first professional-level tournaments. Canada Cup Gaming brought their April Duels second outing to Vancouver, and we were lucky enough to be invited to come down and watch all of the action.

The tournament took place over the span of two days, and encompassed four of the major fighting game franchises: King of Fighters, Street Fighter, Marvel vs. Capcom and Street Fighter X Tekken.

April Duels II - First Day, Standings, Day 2 Schedule

For those of you late-night streamers, April Duels II continues online in the Salty Suite (which should be on-air shortly if you follow the link to the Canada Cup stream #2). For everyone else, consider the day ended, and this your brief wrap up and the current standings!

Vancouver Hosts April Duels This Weekend

I play a fair bit of fighting games. I’ve even had delusions of becoming a professional gamer in the realm of Street Fighter. So, as far as eSports are concerned, I get pretty hype about the fight-game tournament scene… Those in the know probably get what I’m working up to here: Vancouver is playing host to its very first major fighting game tournament this weekend April Duels.

Gears of War 3 Launch Party [Event]

Over the last little while Microsoft has been running a competition of the ARG (Alternate Reality Game) type with the final round granting those who had completed the challenges and opportunity to attend a Gears 3 launch party at one of two Canadian locations. The challenges involved puzzle solving, location hunting, meat-gathering and all sorts of other non-sense that lead to a location of a barge docked in the harbour at the north end of Main Street (for us Vancouverites anyways).

Galaxion: Driven by the Rhythm [Event]

If you're a fan of Shogun Gamer then you, in turn, know that Shogun Gamer is a fan of events, especially of the local variety. Whenever possible we strike out to find new and interesting geek/nerd oriented events to provide a little love to in the form of publicity, while helping ourselves to an evening on the town with a bunch of our like-minded brethren. Oh, and we do the sexy photo-shoot thing. As such, it's my pleasure to inform you all that there's one such event coming up next weekend!
