Dark Void

[Review] Dark Void

Overall Feeling:
Dark Void ended up being what we all thought it wouldn’t be: a forgettable action game. Even though the premise is interesting and it comes from a solid heritage the game boils down to being nothing more than standard action that never once feels compelling or that entertaining. Compared to the games that have come out in the past few months and what’s ahead I have a feeling some people may completely forget about Dark Void since the game doesn’t really do anything to make it stick out.
The Pros:
The voice acting from veterans such as Nolan North, Paul Eiding is nice. To my surprise the game has one of the best soundtracks I’ve ever heard. The last boss battle is cool. Zipping around on a jetpack does have its moments.
The Cons:
Cliché story that as a whole feels a bit spotty at times, especially the ending that tries too hard to set up a sequel. Most of the missions are rather boring as they follow a standard pattern that is almost never broken up. Art direction is bland and the so-so visuals don’t help. Weapon variety is a bit small and as a whole the weapons look and feel a bit weak. You can beat the game in around 6-9 hours and it offers no replay value outside of Trophy/Achievement whoring.

When a new IP launches this generation there may not be a lot of hype for it but there’s always a certain amount of buzz and hope. In this day and age having an original game come out that not only looks interesting but is something that can be considered unique is almost an endangered species of sorts.

QuarterSave: First of 2010 Edition EP21

Welcome to QuarterSave’s first official podcast of the New Year! That’s right; the whole crew is back again this week. Evil Casey, Good Casey, and Neutral Robert have all returned. This week’s podcast features our thoughts on the New Year’s rush. With the amount of games that have been pushed back, and now the backlog that it has created, is the new standard of having a bunch of big titles in Q1 a good or a bad thing?

CES 2010: Exclusive Interview and hands on with Capcom's Dark Void Zero on the DS

There's been tones of hype and anticipation around Capcom's jet pack fueled action adventure game Dark Void, which is set to drop this month. But what some people don't know is that Dark Void is not a new IP. It is actually based off an 8-Bit classic arcade game that never quite made it to market due to the rise of the Nintendo Entertainment System. Fortunately for us we got to sit down with Shana Bryant, the Associate Producer for Dark Void Zero on the DS.

Get a taste of Dark Void this week via a demo

It looks like Capcom may not have entirely lost faith in their new IP Dark Void as a demo will be made available this week.  The demo will be available on Xbox Live on January 6 and will hit the PlayStation Network on January 7.

Exact details on the demo weren’t specified aside from that it will offer players an opportunity to test out the games jetpack along with the unique vertical cover mechanics.

Capcom comments on their plans concerning Western developers

Besides taking chances on new IPs and games that could be considered niche in nature, Capcom also took a massive risk on Western development studios with somewhat mixed results.  Bionic Commando which was the first game to use a Western developer, the now closed Grin, resulted in a game that was received somewhat poorly among critics and bombed to an extent at retail.  Here’s hoping Capcom’s next Western developed game Dark Void fairs a bit better in both regards.

Capcom delays Lost Planet 2, Super Street Fighter IV and Monster Hunter Tri

In a revised financial forecast report Capcom has announced that they will delay Lost Planet 2, Super Street Fighter IV and Monster Hunter Tri from their original Q4 releases and they will now be released in the next fiscal year which means sometime between April 2010 and March 2011. Yes, I know that's such an exact release window.

Capcom announces plans for a Dark Void film which may star....

Capcom seems to be quite serious about expanding their franchises past the realm of video games. Last year the company announced that a live-action Lost Planet film was in the works with a budget in the realm of $150 million.  Now the company has their sights on another franchise and one that we haven’t even played yet: Dark Void.

Bionic Commando bombs at retail

One of the wildcard games this year was Capcom’s reboot/relaunch or whatever the hell you want to call it of Bionic Commando. After releasing a remake of the original Bionic Commando last year that not only was a good game but hit all the right notes when it came to fan nostalgia it was unclear if the “proper” next-gen version of Bionic Commando would be solid as well.
